First 20 MW Plant - Construction
The world's first grid-scale, flywheel-based energy storage plant is being built in Stephentown, New York. When completed, the 20 MW plant will operate continuously, storing and returning energy to the grid to provide approximately 10% of New York's overall frequency regulation needs. More information on the frequency regulation service and how Beacon Power flywheels provide it can be found here.
July 6, 2010 - During the week of June 28th, Beacon Power delivered a number of specially equipped containers consisting of power electronics, cooling and other support equipment to the Stephentown site. They were lowered onto permanent foundations where they will be wired in place and then interconnected with flywheels. Support equipment for a total of 4 MW of energy storage capacity is now in place.
